Dorothy HammackApril 22, 1931 ~ December 29, 2017 (age 86)
Dorothy Kate Webster Hammack (a.k.a. Dot, Dotchie, Memaw Birmingham and Memaw Bob) passed away at her home on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the age of 86. She is survived by her sons Stanley Hammack (Brenda), Dennis Hammack and David Hammack (Bonnie); daughter Lisa Hammack; grandchildren Brien Hammack, Sean Hammack and Jenifer Hammack Eubanks (Hank); great grandchildren Aiden Hammack, Colton Hammack, Samuel Hammack, Scarlett Hammack, Fenix Glenn, Maverick Glenn and Sebastian Hammack; brother Sherman Theron Webster; and sister-in-law Libby Yoos. She was preceded in death on December 29, 2016 by her loving husband of 67 years, Robert Stanley Hammack. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Alice and Sherman Webster; her brothers, Kenneth Webster and James Webster; and granddaughter Kara Hammack.
She was born and raised in Eldridge, Alabama and graduated from Carbon Hill High School.
She married her husband, Robert, in June 1949. His employment with Alabama Power Company took them all over the central and southern areas of Alabama eventually landing in Selma for a few years before making Birmingham their permanent home in 1962.
She was an active member of Crumly Chapel United Methodist Church for more than 56 years. For many years, she was an active member and president of the Alabama Cooperative Extension’s Westwood Homemakers Club. She was passionate and ever so talented in many crafts for which she received blue ribbons– sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, cross stitching, embroidery and smocking – you name it. And even authored her own book on her life’s journey. She left her family a lasting legacy through so many gifts of her talents.
Dotchie was a ray of light to whom everyone was drawn. With an undying spirit and zest for life, she always kept things interesting. Family and her faith were the most important things to her. One of her favorite things was spending time with her family (including many nieces and nephews) at the family farm in Fayette County. And from every one of those events, came a funny story about Dotchie’s antics!
Visitation is Wednesday, January 3 at 11 AM with service at Noon at Crumly Chapel United Methodist Church located in Forestdale at 336 Crumly Chapel Road, Birmingham 35214. Burial will follow at Cleveland Church of Christ in Bankston, Alabama. Crestview Funeral Home handling arrangements.
