On the morning of May 6, 2017, Mary Teresa Nally Thornton passed away peacefully. She was born in Jacksonville, IL on November 18, 1927, the first child of Irene and Raphael Nally. She attended Cathedral High School in Sioux City, Iowa. She married E.J. Thornton, Jr, of Des Moines, Iowa, on Easter Monday, April 7th, 1947 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City, Iowa. After a short stay in Ames, Iowa, they moved south to Knoxville, Tennessee and then to Birmingham, Alabama. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage and were blessed with 9 children, 23 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. After raising her children, Mary had a long career working for John Carroll Catholic High School and Brookwood Hospital.

She is survived by her husband, E.J., and their children: Tom (Sarah), Tim (Cathy), Mary (Gerald Burns), Margaret (Jack Hampton), Ray (Elizabeth), Joe (Pat), Sara (Paul Bryant) and Rebecca (William Dorsten). She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Smith, from Sioux City, Iowa. Her daughter, Helen Ann Lagauite, preceded her in death.

A service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held Thursday, May 11, 2017, with visitation beginning at 11:00 AM followed by a funeral mass at 12:00 PM at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Trinity Mission (9001 New Hampshire Ave Silver Spring, MD  20903) or the Our Lady of Sorrows School Foundation (1728 Oxmoor Rd Birmingham, AL 35209).
