John W. Ames, Jr., age 74, passed away on May 21, 2020 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elsie Brandon; step-father, Ray Brandon; brother, Ronnie Brandon; and sister, Pat Patterson.
He is survived by his wife, Diana; daughter, Melinda; grandson, Christopher Sorsby (Cheyenne Champion Fiance); and brother, Jimmy Brandon.
John was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the Howlin’ Mad Smith Detachment of the Marine Corps League and he participated in the Iwo Jima Reenactment team. He was retired from the Social Security Administration, where he worked in the mail room, ICT and as a CRT. Mr. Ames was a member of Westwood Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He formerly served as a deputy in Madison County and served as a police officer at the Veterans Hospital in Birmingham.
Services will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at Westwood Baptist Church, 2349 Forestdale Blvd, Birmingham, Alabama 35214. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at the church, with social distancing. Entombment will be at 2:00 P.M. at Valhalla Mausoleum, 698 Winchester Rd, NE, Huntsville, Alabama 35811.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Howlin’ Mad Smith Detachment of the Marine Corps League or Westwood Baptist Church Benevolence Fund.
